1-2 Going in-depth

Week 1

HI. To explore deeper into my ideas, I will have to start asking relevant questions and by answering them, it will eventually fill in the gaps.

Continuing from my previous blog, I will only choose two topics to further explore the possible contents. The chosen topics are:-

  1. Color blindness

  2. See beauty in ugliness

  3. Our local garden

For each topic, I will elaborate based on 3Ws and 1H (who, what, why, how)

Color blindness

1. Who are the people that I am targeting?

The people that are targeted are mainly people that does not have color blindness and are interested in learning about color blind carriers

2. What will the targeted people get out of this?

I would like to educate them about color blindness and allowing them to experience what they see in their daily lives

3. Why is this significant for the targeted people?

Mainly to create awareness, allowing them to be more understanding and considerate towards color blind carriers

4. How is this going to help any parties related to this topic?

Hopefully this is an opportunity to help color blind carriers realize their daily struggles are being understood and taken serious by people. And for others to be able to show empathy towards color blind carriers.

Case study

Using AR

There is this case study, which is an immersive awareness campaign. In this case study, users are to scan a QR code which opens up their AR camera and allows them to see the posters through the AR color lens. Through this way, users will be seeing through the eyes of a color blind carrier and experience what they experience in their daily life.

Color blind Campaign

In this case study, the execution is to only allow people with color blindness to understand. Coca-Cola created a reversed Ishihara image that only color blind carriers are able to decipher. In return, this would allow everyone else to be curious and gain their attention towards the red-green color blindness condition.

Color blind Campaign

In this case study, Tennessee Vacation installed EnChroma lens in the viewfinders around tourist spots. People with color blindness look through the viewfinders and are able to see the colors that they were missing out in the scenic view. The merging of color blindness and the beauty of the landscape were able to capture the significance of the wonderful colors in Tennessee.

I did more research to make sure that I am really passionate about it. Right now, there are still some uncertainty of the sustainability of this project. I will start by researching more on color blind carriers themselves, "What are the level of struggles that they are facing?", "Does the seriousness of it match my expectations?"... After going through a few articles, the conclusion that I have is that color blind carriers struggle on a daily basis. The example of limited areas are with traffic lights, food, sunburn, clothing, reading colored charts/images, etc... However, there were also color blind carriers being positive about this condition.

"...As an adult, I can appreciate it, because I know my perception of the world is different, and there’s value in that. I have a totally different relationship with color than other people do. I think you see more color than I do, but I see more in color. And there’s so many ways that I like your relationship with color better. But I don’t like it enough to want to give up mine". - Brooke Swanson

Thoughts: After doing some research, I am unsure about the necessity of this project. Going through different case studies, majority of them focuses more on benefitting color blind carriers instead of non-color blind carriers. The main encounter is that color blind carriers themselves do see this condition as a struggle at times but not always. On the contrary, many of them are so used to it, they are not really complaining about this condition but instead embracing it as something unique for them. And this definitely sends out a positive message to everyone.

Our local garden

1. Who are the people that this topic is targeted?

The people are mainly Malaysians, who have little knowledge about Malaysia's nature.

2. What are the intentions of this topic?

Mainly to introduce the wonders of Malaysia's nature and gain appreciation from people

3. Why is this topic significant?

Allowing people (in a way) to be able to be in touch with our home country's nature, appreciate the value of nature and the cultural background

4. How is this topic going to convey the significance of it?

Hopefully letting people being in touch with nature (remotely/physically/virtually). Allowing them to experience it and learn about the different species. The feeling of being educated and experiencing something wonderful.

Case Study

Physical Installation

The case study that inspired me to venture into this topic is very interesting itself. It is a physical installation of a small garden with artificial plants. Users are to insert a coin to trigger the interactivity of the installation. The individual artificial plants are interactive in different ways. In my opinion, this installation in a way is simple yet engaging.

Physical setup

In this case study, the artist Clare Celeste Börsch is famous for creating immersive installations to raise awareness on ecological and biodiversity crisis. She creates her installations by hand-cutting photographs, hand painted images or even illustrations. Her artwork does not exactly have any technological interaction but the strong and vivid visuals were able to convey a message.

“We have forgotten we are of the planet — Made of minerals and inhaling the breathe of trees. A liveable future is contingent upon healing this illusion of separateness. My art offers spaces for reconnection and alignment.” - Clare Celeste Börsch

AR technology

This case study is called Blossom. It does not have much details on the project background. However, I find the execution of this pretty amazing. The artist has the idea of an explosion of colors and plants happening anywhere we want them to be. It consists of AR, illustrations and animations.

Interactive website

For this case study, I studied an interactive website called Umami Land. A website that features Japanese cuisine. It is created in a way for users to feel like they are on a food trip journey where they are introduced to different Japanese cuisine. I sort of foresee my topic being executed in a similar way where different species are being introduce through a journey-like way.

Other similar case studies:-

For me to have a more secure and confident idea, I did further research on the specific areas of Malaysia nature that I could probably focus on. Areas such as the species itself or the environment/ecosystem or specifically herbs/spices.

Local species

Malaysia floral and fauna species

*images above are property of others, I do not own them

These are the variety of species that I was able to gather from the research. The point of the research was to expose myself to the amount of species that are able to fit into context and as content.

Local environment/ecosystem

Malaysian scenic places

*images above are property of others, I do not own them

After doing some research on the wonders of Malaysia, these are a few collections of places in Malaysia that really shout "NATURE".

Local herbs/spices

Malaysian herbs and spices

*images above are property of others, I do not own them

These are one of the few herbs/spices species that I was able to collect. The plants itself looks interesting and while reading the details, it definitely something that could be further explore.

Related additional findings

While scrolling through Facebook, I stumble upon something that I think could lead me into something.

A Facebook user name Kevin Bathman shared a post about common ingredients for Malaysian cooking. And among the photos of different ingredients, there is a photo of a pantry/cupboard filled with variety of ingredients. I feel like the representation of the "pantry/cupboard" could inspire me to some kind of direction.

*If I were to approach solely on local herbs/spices

While going through different articles, I stumble upon a campaign - Cut a tree. Kill a Life. that featured endanger animals of Malaysia. There is a series of visual posters which I find visually interesting.

Through this campaign, I was able to conclude that usually campaigns that feature nature in Malaysia are usually about the endangered animals or raising awareness about deforestation/illegal activities on nature.

Thoughts: What if there is a different approach to this? What if instead of showing the negative side of nature, show the positive part where people could embrace the beauty of it and learn to appreciate more on nature.

To wrap this up, I have yet to decide on a specific direction to approach for the topic "Our local garden". But I have been thinking, whether is possible to combine both local species and local herbs/spices together to make the entire context richer. My goal is simple, I just want people to be more in touch with nature and eventually showing appreciation towards it. I personally feel like I would need some external feedback for me to proceed to the next step.

That's all for now! In the next blog, I will continue updating my progress after getting some external input on my ideas.

Bye! :)
