Week 10
HI. Continuation of receiving feedback and working on refinements
This blog will be mainly sharing the feedback that I got from advisors and the refinements I did to address the feedback.
Regarding my previous blog, I met with the first advisor of the week to review my progress and get additional feedback for improvements.
Summary of feedback:-
Sitemap can in a more simpler form
The current sitemap can be labelled as the user flow
Could try specifying the user flow by specific task
While planning, could also identify the elements that are able to push users to stay longer and explore more
Gamification feature should lean towards the core experience; DISCOVER
Question that was raised:-
I have 2 collaborators in the project, which is the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and Airbnb. Will it be weird to have 2 collaborators? Will it seem that both of them is not relevant to on another?
Suggestions:-
I could try mapping them out to one another and see how they are related to one another?
the ROI must make sense to both of them
Figure out who is the main organizer and what are their roles
it could be related to CSR
Before meeting my another advisor, I quickly rearrange and refine things that I wanted to share to get feedback on. There were few areas that I refined to be more thorough and clear.
I created a chart to map out the relationship of the parties involved in the project and how are they relevant to each other. In this case, I wanted to map out the relevancy of both MNS and Airbnb being part of this project and the microsite being fit into the context. While planning the chart, there were a few things to consider:-
What is the common interest between MNS and Airbnb? How are they relevant to each other?
What is the relationship between MNS, Airbnb and the microsite? What are their roles and contribution in this project?
Are their roles and contributions relevant to them? Does it meet their initial goals and objectives? Does it meet their initial vison and mission?
What are the benefits gained by individual parties? How are MNS and Airbnb being positively impacted in this project? Is the collaboration worth it?
I addressed all above in a simplified way through the chart.
Moving on, I did refinements on the sitemap and user flow. I specify the user flow by individual task to have a better understanding.
The sitemap is to basically emphasize on the main pages available in the microsite. While the user flow is to give an overview of how users navigate throughout the microsite. There are 4 specific task; A, B, C and D to deliver a more detailed experience flow of users.
Task A - Access Places nearby or Random places
From the landing page, users will choose to either explore places near them or they randomize a place to explore. Ultimately is to lead them to the State page that shows the specific 3D space of a state for them to discover places and encourage them to plan a trip via Airbnb.
Task B - Access Navigation page
Users can choose to access additional states through the Navigation page. User will have an overview of all the available states in one single page and able to access them.
Task C - Access Gamification feature
There is an additional gamification feature that can be access via the State page and the Navigation page. Through this gamification feature, users will be encourage to discover and explore more in the microsite to collect gamified badges. There will be a discount reward for users to collect their bookings in Airbnb.
Task D - Access Information page
Users could also access the Information page through the Landing page. The information page is to introduce the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and leading users to their official website if they are interested.
Summary of feedback:-
When deciding on the layout of the 3D scene, I should also consider different aspects such as the user POV, performance quality, the necessity, etc.
The description of the core experience should be more direct and easy to understand, keeping it at DISCOVER might be better
The interaction idea and content structure idea is quite interesting, can start prototyping and try it out
Could also find a fresh way to present the 3D space in a less predicted way
My thoughts:-
After gathering all the feedback and analyzing them, I started to plan out my next step. I feel like I should start planning out my 3D scene and start modelling the 3D objects. I should also start planning out the technical interactions that is needed and try it out. Once I have a solid base, I could do refinements more effectively with a clearer direction.
Technical enquiry
I met with another advisor and raised my worries and concerns on the technical parts of the microsite. So my initial plan was to use React.js and Three.js, I also have an alternative plan which is to use Unity3D. However, after consulting my advisor, he introduce PlayCanvas to me, which he thinks it would be much more simpler and convenient to use.
I went through their website to get to know more about PlayCanvas and realized their user interface is similar to Unity but they uses JavaScript instead. I went though a few demos and I feel like this platform is currently something that I would want to proceed with. I will need to have further understanding and hopefully have more confidence.
Further planning
Next week (Week 11), we will be having a 30mins sharing with invited guest. To be prepared for this, I will be planning the flow of my presentation and quickly draft out the 3D visuals to set up more solid wireframes.
I will also need to start picking up technical skills step-by-step in PlayCanvas and plan out the technical needs that is required in the microsite.
That's all for now, in my next blog I will be sharing the preparation for the invited guest presentation and my drafted content.
