Week 3
HI. I have to quickly pick things back up even though I don't have a clear sense of direction. As time is running out and I have to quickly prep for my final pitch deck presentation.
Continuing from my previous blog, I mentioned that I'm starting to lose confidence and interest on my initial proposed execution which was creating an app for users to learn about new places and eventually planning a trip with the app. For me to feel motivated again, I know I have to quickly come up with a new solution to gain back some confidence.
To start things back up again, the first thing that I did is to review back my entire project outline and identify my initial intentions towards this project. Main focus in my project:-
- Gaining appreciation from locals towards ecotourism spots in Malaysia
- Inspire and encourage locals to explore these places on their own willingness
- Bring locals closer to local nature
After clarifying my main focuses, I believe that my previous app idea is not something that I want to carry on with. My initial intentions were simple; to INSPIRE and APPRECIATE local nature, and what I wanted to do was to focus on something more content based instead of providing services. So I decided on a main goal for me to approach more easily; Able to INSPIRE and APPRECIATE ecotourism spots in Malaysia, eventually exploring/visiting them.
Previously I kept thinking about creating an app to deliver my contents, however, I realized is not really necessary to create a big app just to present the contents. So I started thinking about different ways to deliver my contents more effectively and simple to understand. I prepared a pitch deck draft to present to my advisor to get more input on the ideas.

Ideation phase
Solution phase
Because I wanted to deliver a content-based platform, I thought about instead of throwing every single information to the users, why not just bring information that is relevant to the user themselves. And to achieve this, I thought about personalization, delivering content based on individual needs. The idea of creating a quiz concept came to me, so I roughly planned out the details as I only have limited time to present it to my next advisor.
I also thought about the end goal of my solution, as I cannot just expect users to go through a personalization process and get results without an ultimate goal. Since my idea is to inspire and encourage people to explore and visit ecotourism places, I thought about instead of creating a platform for them to book their trip why not just link this entire quiz + content experience to a travel booking site.
I have also thought about alternative ways to deliver it, not just virtually/remotely but also physically. I am aware that before the Covid-19 pandemic, occasionally there will be travel fairs or exhibition that allows customers to book their trips in reasonable prices. Usually places like this set up different booths of different travel agencies/companies. I feel like having a interactive installation on site will help to engage more people and also promote ecotourism places to them. If they are interested, they will eventually go to relevant booths to plan their trip.
Visual reference
These were the visual reference that I presented too which consists of reference for the concept, interactive and delivery part.
As this idea is still pretty recent from me, I decided to send my deck to another advisor for more input.
Summarize remarks from advisors:-
- Since I am focusing on a more content-based execution, I need to identify the essential contents that would make my project stand out
- The project goal and problem can be further define to help me identify the direction of my contents
- Need to think of a more creative way to present my contents and how it can bring out the uniqueness of my project
- Try working towards a concept that I want to deliver with my content, reframe the way people see the different locations
- Redefine my TA, try scoping it down to something more specific as it would provide me a clearer direction to approach
- Find an interesting way to deliver the contents, minimize the steps for users to reach the end goal
My thoughts:
I pretty much agree with the advisors. As this solution came to me quite last minute, I only have limited time to prepare this much of detailed explanation to them. I have not gotten to the part where I really think about the specific contents that I want to work with. I will need to do further research on what are the interesting contents that could be deliver and look at case studies from different countries.
After deciding going with a more content-based execution, I will need to start doing further case study analysis and research on how contents can be delivered to attract my TA. I will not continue my findings and analysis in this blog to make things less complicated.
That's all for now, stay tuned for the next blog where I will further improve my idea and execution.
