Week 5
HI. Create an experience that could engage and benefit the users.
In this blog, I will be sharing my refined idea and analyzing the possible improvements that could be made.
I prepared a short deck to share my refined ideas to the advisors.
In the refined idea, I removed the personalization part where a place will be assigned to users. Instead, I approach a direction where users could just navigate to their interested features of the places.
First sharing
I proposed 3 possible refined titles for my project. In the titles, I was mainly focusing on "wonderland" because of my proposed concept: Themed-land.
I wanted to turn the ecotourism spots into a wonderland concept where it is categorized into different themes. And the different themes are representing the iconic features of the ecotourism places.
I sort of did a content planning example that could help represent the different themed-lands and also prepared visual concepts that could visually support it. My idea was for users to choose a preferred themed-land and it will bring them into a 360° experience of the land where they could interact with different areas and learn about the ecotourism places.
Summary of feedback:
Communication concerns:-
might need a solid communication strategy to reach more people
Need a communication plan
Need to decide whether this is a standalone project or can a develop into a campaign
Content concerns:-
Think about the experience from the users' perspective
The different scenery of the themed-land might be too imaginative for users
Find a way to visualize content and able to deliver the information as a whole package
Find a way to use the map concept in a more strategic way
Research and find references for the interaction and experience that I would want to deliver
Focus point would be the interaction + content
Engagement concerns:-
Title is still too generic, not catchy enough
The overall experience is like going through a catalog, not engaging enough
Find a way that could engage users in a quick and easy way
Consider on personalization content like geo-location
Should facilitate around "Discovery"
Think about what would push people to discover and explore the ecotourism places more
Design something that would attract and engage with users
My thoughts:
I was unsure about removing the personalization feature too but I was thinking that the different themed-land could sort of replace it too
I might need to reconsider the way I personalized the content for users
I also have the concern of information being too narrowed down as right now a place is only presented according to the interested features of the users
I need to continue refining and planning the delivery direction while also consider the user experience in the entire process
Conclusion: a way to attract and engage with users, find a way to visualize the content and deliver it in a more simplified way
After receiving the feedback and analyzing them, in a short period of time, I sort of refined my idea again to prepare for the second sharing of the week.
Second sharing
Taking advice from the lecturers, I realized personalizing content for users can sort of engage with them. I added a geo-location feature into my idea, instead of just looking through interested features that the places could offer, a feature that users can locate the nearest ecotourism place to visit.
I structured out the core experience where it could be divided into 2 flow.
Users locate the nearest place and learn about it
Users find the most interesting place and learn about it
I have also simplified the process of learning about a place, instead of the different features scattered into different sections, a specific place will show all the features that they offer in a single page.
Summary of feedback:
The Malaysia map as a visual concept might not be interesting enough
The first page of the website needs to be interesting and engaging
Find a purpose of the website, what attracts people to it
Can try thinking of a way to deliver my previous quiz concept as a personalization feature
Use an interesting and creative way to present the map concept
Introduce this website in your own way as a designer, how you see the places
My thoughts:
I would like to challenge myself in delivering another way of personalization to have another option
I need to find a way that could simplify the number of steps and could easily engage with users
I need to start thinking the visualization of the different themed-lands
References
I also presented a few references that could help visualize my idea of interaction and art style.
Tone and mood
The tone and mood that I envision is something more colorful and vibrant that could mesmerized the users. And overall it could give out a more joyful and exciting energy.
Art style
I have 2 art style in mind, one is 3D and another is 2D. I might consider using both and combining them, but this still need more experimentation to have a final decision.
Interaction and transitions
2D map concept
This reference is from the Misato website that introduces the Misato Town in Shimane, Japan. It uses a map design to visualize the overall content that the website offers. The camera enters the different features on the map when users continuously scrolling down the page. I envision my first page to have a 2D map of the different themed-lands that users could click on.
Interaction idea
This website is to promote Marseille, France. It uses a 3D map concept out front where users could view in different camera angles and could also zoom-in and out for clearer view. It also have interactive points at different location where users could experience a realistic 360° experience of the specific places and also learn more about it. I envision the 3D concept map to have a interactive camera and areas that are interactive too.
Interaction and transition idea
This website is in a 3D perspective where users could navigate around interacting with different "3D features". It is a website with a gamified experience about customer service. I was inspired by the transition of the camera angles where it changes from a top, 3-quarter view to a front-bottom, 3-quarter view. I envision the specific location to appear in this camera transition when users interact with the 3D concept map.
Transition idea
This website introduce the Zenly app; a social app. I was inspired by the transition of the pages, where it changes its view smoothly when users are navigating to another page by scrolling. I envision the information of a specific place to change coherently when users navigate to the different features.
After going through this week, I sort of have a clearer idea on the interaction and concept that I want to deliver. Right now, my concerns are the amount of content that I am going to include and also the technical aspects. Because the amount of content would be deciding the amount of assets that I have to prepare.
I will need to plan out the content more and start picking back up my web technical skills step-by-step to be able to catch up. I am also worrying about the amount of assets that I will have to prepare, hopefully I will be able to find the most optimal solution.
That's all for now, in my next blog, I will continue updating my development progress and idea direction.
